Incubator inside MRI
Actiflow created an incubator that fits in the limited space of an MRI
Aspect Imaging, a developer of compact MRI systems, worked with Actiflow for the development of a child incubator to be used inside their MRI system.
The combined system is used to make MRI scans of newborns of roughly 1 to 4 kg. Thanks to the compact size of the MRI, and the lack of magnetic radiation outside the system, this product can be placed directly inside a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) environment in a hospital.

The Challenge
The use of the incubator inside an MRI resulted in a strict list of requirements concerning available space, material use, noise reduction, etc. All these requirements were taken into account from the first conceptual design phase. Actiflow mainly focused on the climate system of the incubator. Using flow simulations combined with prototyping and testing, a final solution was developed that complies with all requirements and standards.
Results
The development resulted in one of the smallest incubators in the market, with a width of only 18cm. Thanks to the Embrace neonatal system, a newborn can stay within the desired climate, both during preparation of the MRI and the imaging itself. In 2017, the first MRI with incubator has been installed in Shaare Zedek hospital, Jerusalem.
