Transforming the way ports and airports manage windy conditions
Wind conditions have a significant impact on port and airport operations. When wind speeds exceed safety limits, operations must be restricted or paused—leading to delays, higher costs, and operational disruptions.
Therefore, Actiflow developed the Actiflow Wind App, providing port and airport authorities with precise local wind data and forecasts, enabling smarter, safer operational decisions. On windy days, the Wind App becomes an essential tool for operational planning, allowing operators to anticipate local wind conditions hours or even days in advance, improving safety and cost-efficiency.
The Actiflow Wind App is designed primarily for port and airport authorities, but it can be used by any organization that needs real-time local wind information and forecasts. For example, cities can use the app to predict wind conditions in streets and over bridges, helping to identify potential hazards for pedestrians.
Strong winds not only affect aircraft landing and takeoff—they also determine when and where ground handling operations can be performed safely. Most airports reply on a single wind measurement near the active runway to estimate the wind conditions across the entire airport, which can be highly conservative.
Wind velocities near gates are usually much lower and vary significantly across different areas of the airport. As a result, ground handling is often unnecessarily stopped—even when local conditions would allow operations to continue safely. The Actiflow Wind App provides gate-specific wind data, enabling more accurate decision-making that improves both safety and operational performance.
In ports, strong winds can hinder ship arrivals, departures, and mooring conditions. Port authorities often rely on a few wind sensors to estimate conditions across the entire port. However, local wind conditions vary a lot across the port due to the presence of buildings, cranes, container stacks and other large obstructions.
The Actiflow wind App accounts for all these obstructions and delivers high-accuracy wind data and forecasts over the water and near mooring locations. This allows authorities to make less conservative, data-driven decisions supporting operational planning and accurate mooring analysis.
The Actiflow Wind App is an online platform providing ports and airports with real-time wind data and short-term forecasts at every square meter. The app is customized for every client and features:
The Actiflow Wind App combines live wind measurements with advanced numerical simulations to deliver accurate wind maps and forecasts. Using state-of-the-art flow modelling on large-scale 3D models, the app captures wind variations across areas of up to 20 km in radius. Thanks to today’s computational power, these models capture complex environments in full 3D detail, allowing wind speed variations to be calculated at every square meter. By integrating general weather forecasts or live measurement data, the App provides valuable, detailed wind information at any location, making it an indispensable tool for port and airport operational planning and monitoring.
