Vink Bouw and Did Vastgoedontwikkeling plan to develop a new building called The Miller in Schiedam, The Netherlands. This relatively high building is located in the so-called wind mill biotope of wind mill De Palmboom (palm tree). Therefor it is needed to specify what the effect of the new building is on the availability of wind for the wind mill. Actiflow was asked to determine this effect based on a theoretical wind mill biotope study.

The challenge

This study uses the geometry of the existing surroundings, the addition of the new building, the features of the wind mill and the local wind statistics. All this was used to determine if the building fits within the wind mill biotope rules. However, the height of the new building exceeds these rules. In a second step Actiflow determined the maximum possible effect of the new building on the availability of wind for the wind mill. We looked at the sector of the wind rose that is occupied by the new building (less then 10⁰) and the amount of useful wind coming towards the wind mill from this direction (less then 1%).

Results

This theoretical study showed in an relatively quick and easy manner that the effect of the new building is limited, despite the fact that it is located within the wind mill biotope of De Palmboom and that it exceeds the maximum height criteria.
