Pedestrian-level wind and aeronautical study
Actiflow was commissioned by CoS Properties Ltd to conduct a pedestrian-level wind assessment and aeronautical study of the proposed development at Monument Place & Monument Plaza, Gibraltar.
The objective of the wind assessment was to ascertain the potential impact of the construction of the building on wind comfort in the surrounding area.
The objective of the aeronautical study is to ascertain that the construction of the building will not result in any adverse impact on the wind conditions at the runway approach and touchdown areas of Gibraltar International Airport.
Case details
Situation
The proposed development site is located at the intersection of Winston Churchill Avenue and Devil’s Tower Road. The plan is to expand and partially replace the existing buildings on the site. The Rock of Gibraltar is situated just to the south of the proposed development, while the runway of Gibraltar International Airport is located approximately 200 metres to the north. The site is situated in a commercial and residential area, with buildings of a low to mid-rise nature.
Pedestrian-level wind assessment
The pedestrian-level wind assessment quantifies the wind conditions for three configurations using the Lawson LDDC criteria. This is achieved by combining the simulated wind flow patterns with local wind statistics based on long-term wind measurements.
The wind microclimate is simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Actiflow assessed three building configurations: the current situation, the proposed development placed in the current surroundings and in future surroundings.
Following a wind assessment of the roads surrounding the proposed development, namely Winston Churchill Avenue to the west and Devil’s Tower Road to the south, Actiflow has determined that the wind conditions will remain comfortable for all three variants. Furthermore, there is no risk of wind-related distress for the general public.
Aeronautical study
The results of the aeronautical study demonstrated that the proposed development will have a negligible impact on exceeding wind speed and speed fluctuation thresholds at the runway approach and touchdown areas.
