Drilling platform Centrica

Actiflow proposed measures to adapt the HVAC system on the platform

Home > Projecten > Drilling platform Centrica

Iv-Oil & Gas is part of the Iv-Group. This is a multidisciplinary engineering agency with expertise in the fields of industry, infrastructure, harbours and the maritime sector.

Iv-Oil & Gas is involved as technical adviser for one of the platforms of Centrica. After commissioning, a problem occurred related to stench of diesel fumes coming out of the HVAC system. A first inventory at the platform showed that exhaust fumes of some diesel generators were sucked in by the HVAC system. This problem was mostly present for specific wind directions and wind speeds.

The project

Iv-Oil & Gas asked Actiflow to give insight in the cause of the problem and thereafter propose measures to diminish the hindrance.

Actiflow made a model including all large structural elements on the drilling platform. This model also included specific details near the inlets to the HVAC system and the exhausts of the engines and generators. A set of CFD simulations was executed, taking into account the temperature difference between the exhaust fumes and the surrounding air. These simulations resulted in visualizations of the dispersal of exhaust fumes and lead to a clear understanding of the cause of the problem.

In the following step, Actiflow proposed measures to adapt the HVAC system on the platform to diminish the problems. These measures were included in the revision of the platform after checking them on economic and practical feasibility.
